Aware with Words in Conversation: Foundation
Who attends this program: People who attend this Foundation program are typically dissatisfied with the quality of their connection - with intimate partners, children, wider family, community or at work. They want to communicate respectfully and compassionately but get stuck in power struggles or arguments, " switch off" because it's all too hard, hold onto resentment when their own needs are not met, or just want more.
Program outcomes: Participants in this course typically gain a lively awareness of where they are connecting effectively (as they define it) and what is happening to limit their effectiveness. It's like "the penny drops". They leave having experienced that it is possible to mix compassion and respect to connect meaningfully with others while juggling the demands of of life. They also leave with skills they can continue to practice.
Program content: This program is based on the work of Marshall B. Rosenberg and the Center for Nonviolent Communication. It is designed as 4 x 3 hour modules – and can be adjusted to best meet the availability of participants. All modules are highly practical and interactive. Each key principle is briefly explained, demonstrated and then practiced – in a safe, playful and respectful space with supportive coaching. The modules are:
- Module 1: Taking a Step Back
Participants experience what it is to pause, take a step back and self connect when triggered by something someone says, or by something in their environment. This emotional intelligence is the foundation for Module 2. - Module 2: From Attacking to Needing
Participants explore the needs lurking beneath self attacks, attack on others or “shutting down”. They discover how to generate multiple strategies to meet a need - and then choose one. - Module 3: Stepping Forward to Connect
With awareness, self connection and choice in place, participants experiment with full presence listening or compassionate honesty - in a way that addresses shared needs. - Module 4: Walking the Talk
This is the opportunity to blend mindsets and skills, and practice co-creating meaningful connection to serve the needs of both people in a conversation.
Foundations for life…
